Writing/Editing/Proofreading

  • The National Association of Science Writers, Inc. offers links to its freelance members, broken down by specialization. One specialization is biology and the environment. NASW will also allow you to run a free online advertisement for a one-time freelance job (ads for permanent jobs and temporary jobs of 6 months or more cost $100).
  • The National Writers Union operates a Resume Bank where you can search for writers who meet your needs (you first have to go through a brief registration process).
  • You can list a specific writing assignment on the job bank of the Washington Independent Writers and have interested freelancers contact you directly.

    Photography

    Collections

  • AGPix.com, a service of AG Editions Inc., allows you to search for outdoor photographs by subject keyword, or for photographers by name or location.
  • The official website of the Nature Photographers Network is not as easily searchable, but it has links to members' galleries and some other good sources of nature photography.
  • For great photos and information on insects and spiders, visit Troy Bartlett's BugGuide.net.

    Individuals

  • Patrick Coin is a Durham, North Carolina-based nature photographer. He has an extensive collection of photographs of North Carolina flora and fauna, especially wildflowers and insects.   • Connie Toops is a naturalist and nature writer/photographer with over 25 years of experience. She lives in the mountains of North Carolina.
  • Gustav Verderber is a nature photographer living in Vermont. He leads nature photography workshops around the world and is available for assignments. He has worked some of his photos into a moving multimedia presentation entitled "Sojourns in the Wild," with original music by North Carolina Celtic harpist and composer William Jackson.

  • The Association of Independents in Radio is an organization of independent public radio producers, programmers, marketers, and others. Its website features a directory of members, with bios, contact information, and details on services provided.

    Translation & Interpretation

  • The Translators and Interpreters Guild is a labor union (a nationwide local of the Communications Workers of America) that operates a referral service. The Guild is currently reorganizing and its website is unavailable. In the interim, you may find referrals to Guild members at this website.
  • If the Guild has no translators/interpreters who meet your needs, try the searchable database of the American Translators Association (ATA), which includes over 5,000 ATA members, many of whom have passed the ATA accreditation test for translators.

    Tech Support

  • If you're in central North Carolina and you're pulling your hair out over a computer run amok, here are a couple of companies that can save your life: Chapel Hill Technology Consulting and BugFreePC. These guys are amazing!
  • D. Mark Gabel of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, offers computer consulting for Apple computers and for Apple applications involving photography, publishing, and writing, as well as for general applications on either Macintosh or Windows.

    Organizational Development Assistance

    This category is a little different from the others. It consists of nonprofit organizations that offer broader organizational development assistance to environmental groups, or to nonprofits in general. It is an age of cooperation and resource-sharing in the green world, and there is all sorts of help available.

  • The mission of Green Media Toolshed is to provide media-related tools and information to its members - environmental nonprofits - so that they can more effectively project their messages to the public and decision-makers. Tools available to member organizations include a database of media contacts, media training, a discussion forum, and a library of print resources, video, still photography, and polling data.
  • Since 1990, the Environmental Support Center has helped local, state, and regional environmental organizations become better managed, funded, and equipped through a Training and Organizational Assistance Program, a Leadership and Enhanced Assistance Program, and a Technology Resources Program.
  • The Institute for Local Self-Reliance has been providing technical assistance and information on sustainability and local economic self-reliance to communities across the United States since 1974.
  • The Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network (N-TEN) helps nonprofits make more effective use of technology to advance their missions. N-TEN has as its members both institutions and individuals who are technical experts working in the nonprofit arena.
  • Envirolink.org has a page with links to many organizations that help nonprofits with everything from fundraising and technology issues to managing volunteers and filing 501(c)(3) applications.
  • Aspiration seeks, out, identifies, and disseminates innovative software development projects that have the potential—but perhaps not the resources or the connections—to help nonprofits address their technology needs.
  • Groundspring.org provides simple, affordable, and integrated services to help small to medium-sized nonprofits become effective users of internet technology for fundraising and management of data on donors and supporters.
  • Idealist.org has a huge collection of links to resources for nonprofits. Categories include: starting a nonprofit, recruiting and managing volunteers, management, fundraising, technology, diversity, and human resources.
  • The Tides Foundation connects donors with innovative, progressive groups around the world.
